Creating an iPhone Friendly Website with iWebkit

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

As an ongoing effort to make my website as accessible as possible, I’ve decided to make an iPhone friendly version of my website.

While searching through google I discovered iWebkit. iWebkit is a site template that makes creating iPhone websites a breeze. By dropping the files on your server you can create a website by following the included guide.

This will be the first in a series of posts showing you how to create a killer iPhone site using iWebkit.

Part 1: Installation
iWebkit can be downloaded from the www.iwebkit.net. I suggest that before you do anything you set up a subdomain for your iPhone site (i.e. iphone.gimpneek.com) this can be done in your control panel for your website and makes it easier for users to remember the url.

Once you have the subdomain set up, open the iWebkit folder and copy the contents of the framework folder into the subdomains root folder. When you view the site you will see an empty iPhone style page. If you don’t see this make sure you have copied all the files into the folder on the server.

You can edit this page by adding the various HTML code to the file. First off we’ll be building an ‘Under Construction’ page. This will let anyone viewing the site that we are still working on it and give them a way to view your normal website.

Editing the template

The body of the page is made up of 3 divs: topbar, content and footer.
Topbar contains everything that will be in the header bar, so things like the page title, any navigation elements etc.
Content is where you’ll be adding your content (duh…). This can contain lists, pictures and paragraphs of text.
Footer contains the made with iWebkit text, though you could add copyright information.

Inside the topbar div add the following code:

div id="title">iPhone /div
div id="leftbutton"> a href="http://www.example.com"> Normal Site /a /div

This will add the page’s title and a button on the left that leads to the non-iPhone version of your site. This can be replaced later with a home button.

In the content div add the following code:

ul class="pageitem"
li class="textbox"> This site is currently under construction, please come back later /li
/ul

This will add a text box to the page. You can split up page content by using different ul and li tags.

You don’t need to change the footer just yet. So at the moment your page is just a static website that says the page is under constuction. In the next post I’ll show you how to add a popup that alerts the user that the website is still under construction and navigates them to your normal website.

Vimeo for Wordpress v1.1.4

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Only a quick update that adds the group URL fix (see last post) and adds a nifty little box on the admin page to help with the hex values, expect a follow up release which will add a popup from which you can choose colours from (this is currently being delayed by CSS issues)

When you type in your hex code into the text box in the admin page and click off the text box it will update the colour next to the text box. As I said just now, this is a temporary measure until I can sort out the CSS

Back from Cornwall and I got my Uni results

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I just got back from rainy rainy cornwall. While I was down there I got my university results, I got a first, so I’m a happy bunny.

While me and Leanna were stuck in doors we began working on a game idea, we’re creating a game called Gumzilla, I’ll have some more info on it when we knuckle down and do some more work on it, but let’s just say it’s going to be epic!

Stick it to the man!!!

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

I was bumming round New Malden with Leanna yesterday and found some A6 stickers so I’ve spent a bit of time today doodling. I made a really great N64 bear sticker and a weird ‘gentleman rudeboy’ design for this site, and for growyourownhuman I went down a fruit sticker road. Ill post up the N64 bear one as I think it’s the best out of the lot. Can’t wait to get inaction pics :)

SFX – Compositing

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

So I was look at Compositing today as that’s my part of the presentation and decided I should actually look into it. I’ve never really looked at the multi-pass render setting in Cinema 4D mainly because I’ve never had to but also because I hardly look at the render settings anyways.

I eventually worked out how to turn multi-pass on and how to add channels to it. and managed to come up with this.

I ended up cloning in the second eye because the original that was there was too bright n seemed weird and out of place. I turned down the ambient Occlusion a bit and after that it looked perfect. Even Jamie liked it :P

Skate 2 – YEAH RIGHT!

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Friday night I got bored and tried some more Skate 2 movie making.

My favourite skateboard Movie is YEAH RIGHT! by Girl, it’s an awesome mix of special effects and skateboarding and I thought I might try and recreate the intro to the film in Skate 2. So using the same technique of uploading the footage, downloading it on my mac, then exporting it as a .mov in flash. I put together the movie. The only thing I regret is the fact my N64 bear looks poop as I rushed the compositing a bit.

Yeah Right! Skate 2 from Colin Wren on Vimeo.
I think I might post a tutorial on how to get the footage out of Skate 2, Though I’m sure people will find an easier way by hooking up their ps3 to an expensive TV card.

You can see the original here

I’m Back

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I’ve spent the past week sorting out my GrowYourOwnHuman presentation so I fell behind on the blog.
But I’ve been pissing about with a new game called Touch Grind, which is so frigging awesome, As I love Skate (see last pose) this a great game for, but I now find myself in the position of wanting to take up skateboarding again :( .

I also set up a RedBubble.com account and made my first T-shirt, I also bought said T-shirt (see pic at end of post). If any body wants to join the N64 Bear revolution they can get it from http://www.redbubble.com/people/gimpneek/t-shirts/2744016-1-n64-bear-pixel-in-black

Skate 2

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I was just looking at the Skate 2 website (which is a little tricky to navigate I might add) and found that I could download my uploaded videos from Skate.reel which is awesome because I love skateboarding movies and this just means I’ll be able to make my own. And now you can get off your board it makes it even better for machinima-esque acting :P .

Anyways check my 2 vids, I have mad moves :)

Today is a good day!

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I got my uni grades today, I got a first for Design For Simulation and a borderline first for Computer Graphics and Animation, my Double Project isn’t marked at this point so, so far I’m heading for a first :) . I’ve been told that Tom Corby was one of my moderators, and he seemed to enjoy the fact that my work with PaedoBot was very technical and that I understood it all, the only criticism was that the project may have been a bit too unethical, but I have no regard for ethics so meh. I’ve also been told by Mark that I have to take the paedobot website down. This is going to give me and excuse to have fun in photoshop and make an awesome website, about how the paedobot was caught.

On the CGA side of things, it seems that Mark and Andy loved my movie, I was even told I would not need to re animate any of the movie for my show-reel. And even though I’m at work as I type this (after working a 6-10 on my day off) I am a very happy bunny :)
